Since this is Easter Sunday and on this day I sometimes think about eggs and bunnies. I thought I would talk about the stories that focus on Bunnies. I like bunnies. Margaret had what I consider an odd relationship with rabbits. I think she liked them. It’s hard to tell. Sometimes I think her stories are not sincere – just words that children like.
Anyway – My favorite story about a bunny is the Whispering Rabbit – illustrated by Garth Williams It was written in 1951. I am not sure where it appeared in 1951- It was published in a collection of stories by Weekly Reader Children’s Book Club in 1965. I find it listed in the Library of Congress as being reprinted 3 more times in 1992, 2008 and 2017.
Then there is ofcourse The Runaway Bunny. This is a cautionary tale about running away and the lengths to which a mother will go to retrieve said bunny. It’s exhausting. There is the poem Rabbit. also in the above collection. The other stories about bunnies are The Golden Egg Book, about a lonely bunny that finds an egg, it hatches and a baby duck appears, ending the bunnies speculation about what was in the egg and solving the problem of being alone- it’s adorable.
