LGB’s

Little Golden Books were originally published by Western Publishing in 1942. My very first book was and still is Mister Dog, the dog that belonged to himself by MWB illustrated by Garth Williams. I collected LGB’s for many years until it got out of hand and I ended up donating the majority to an animal rescue thrift store. I kept my favorites and all of the ones by MWB and illustrators I love.

MISTER DOG : THE DOG WHO BELONGED TO HIMSELF

ILLUSTRATED BY GARTH WILLIAMS

Little Golden Book #128,

1st Published by Simon & Schuster, New York ,1952, MC*

It has 28 pages,  The first  edition was printed with this back. Showing a list of LGBs available. The last on the list being D30 Pluto Pub Goes to Sea. 4 more pages than the 1980 reprint , this edition has additional text and illustrations. I personally think it’s a better story because the additional text and pictures develop the relationship between the boy and Crispian, showing their affection for each other.

The second printing has this on the back and a “B” in the binding margin of the last page, as well as 128 • 25 on the front upper right hand corner. Published by Simon & Schuster, New York ,1952, Illustrated by Garth Williams,

It has 28 pages,

Mister Dog is one of the hard to find, yet best loved books by Margaret Wise Brown, author of Goodnight Moon and Runaway Bunny. Mister Dog, the dog who belonged to himself is a story of Crispan Crispian, a dog who is self sufficient. He meets a boy , who also belongs to himself and together they become friends. Crispan Crispian is a dog that likes things in there right place, he is a “conservative”. It’s a charming story illustrated by Garth Williams, first Published in 1952, it has been out of print for over 20 years. Now back in print, a new generation of readers will enjoy this important book for the young and not so young. Mister Dog
